Net Integration Technologies is selling its Linux server operating system, Nitix OS, for use with third-party hardware. The software is certified for HP, IBM, Sun and Dell servers.

The Markham, ON-based company has unbundled its compact (under 20 MB) autonomic, Linux-based Nitix server operating system (OS) from its integrated hardware solutions, describing it as a server operating system that sets new standards in stability, security, affordability and ease-of-use for small to mid-sized businesses.

Built on a standard Linux kernel, the OS is practically self-aware, self-tuning and self-healing, providing businesses with a straightforward server solution complete with messaging and collaboration, backup, security-enhanced Internet access and protected data storage. Nitix differs from other operating systems on the market in that its advanced autonomic functionality fundamentally reduces the deployment costs and complexities of an IT network infrastructure.

NITI's current Nitix OS release includes a flash memory-based version (coined "Nitix-on-a-chip") that plugs into the Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE) slot of server motherboards. Future releases will be available on stand-alone chips, flash cards and CD-ROMs for use in standard and tier-one servers from Dell, Sun, IBM and Hewlett Packard.

Nitix-powered solutions feature:

File and print services for Windows, Apple, Linux and UNIX clients

Internet connectivity and routing

Self-configuring state-of-the-art firewall

Self-configuring and self-maintaining VPN and remote access services

WWW services

Email services (POP/IMAP/SMTP)

MS Exchange replacement -- self-configuring groupware server with
Microsoft Outlook, Ximian Evolution or Web front end

SQL database engine

Self-configuring/auto-populating LDAP, DNS, DHCP servers

Automatic, unattended, continuous backup system

Integrated auto-updating anti-virus system

Web content filtering system

Intelligent traffic management over redundant Internet connections

Once deployed, a Nitix-powered server solution requires minimal upkeep and human intervention; its operating system can take care of itself:

Nitix is an autonomic system that "knows itself," understands and has
detailed knowledge of its network surroundings.

Incorporates self-configuring and reconfiguring capabilities under
varying and even unpredictable conditions ensuring that the system is
always configured properly reducing nuisance misconfiguration problems.

Includes self-diagnostic and self-healing capabilities that enable the
system to discover problems or potential problems and automatically find a
way to fix those problems in order to keep functioning properly.

Incorporates an intelligent software feature that automatically
identifies and protects itself against various types of network attacks to
maintain overall system security and integrity.

Includes self-healing capabilities enabling the system to recover from
routine and extraordinary events that might cause traditional server
operating systems to malfunction or crash.
