Linux Networx Releases New Clustered Storage System
By NewsDesk
Nov 4, 2004

Linux Networx introduced a new scalable storage technology, called the Xilo™ scalable storage system, that combines storage devices, management software, and the most scalable file systems into an easy-to-administer storage appliance.

Xilo is able to pool capacity from separate storage devices into a large resource, allowing large files to be distributed across multiple storage devices for increased efficiency. Xilo also permits scalability in both throughput and capacity to meet customers’ future storage needs.

Linux Networx also announced it has closed $40 million in Series B funding. The funding will allow Linux Networx to expedite the introduction of next-generation technologies that enhance the productivity and efficiency of cluster computing.

Engineered specifically for Linux Networx computing systems, Xilo directly addresses performance and management issues associated with cluster storage. With technologies designed to work together, customers can expect a reliable and productive computing solution.

"Xilo is filling a need in the storage industry to provide high performance, scalable storage at an impressive price/performance ratio," said Eric Pitcher, vice president of technical marketing for Linux Networx. "The fact that Xilo is engineered to work specifically within a Linux Networx computer system means greater efficiency, higher performance and more productivity."

With Xilo, all storage devices are managed from a single interface, providing a storage sub-system that is simple to manage and easy to upgrade. Xilo effectively manages each storage device and the network setup. Xilo also allows upgrades of the embedded operating system and can tune attributes of the selected file system.

Xilo supports Lustre™, a high performance file system from Cluster File Systems, Inc™ High performance file systems can scale to thousands of compute nodes and petabytes of capacity. By integrating with Lustre, Xilo offers a global name space for better manageability and efficiency.

Lustre has been deployed on some of the largest cluster systems Linux Networx has delivered because of the file system’s scalability and performance capabilities.

"Linux Networx has proven its ability to implement Lustre in some of the most demanding computing environments," said Dr. Peter Braam, president and CTO of Cluster File Systems. "By incorporating Lustre in the Xilo scalable storage system, Linux Networx is demonstrating its ability to engineer highly productive cluster systems that benefit from Lustre’s leading-edge capabilities."
